My grandmother, who died two years ago, had missed her hometown for the rest of her life, but she was never able to visit it again for 70 years after the armistice. It may not be there anymore, my grandmother's family was in North Korea. The war has been stopped for more than 70 years in the name of peace and in a strange form, but the sadness of not seeing her family had been unstoppable for more than 70 year.
Now would My grandmother have met her family, whom she now longed for in a world without war?
I hope that Ukraine will be filled with peace and happiness again soon.'
All the best,

A Letter to the Ukrainian People (translated)
Win-Wei Li
It has been almost two months since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. In the TV news, the imagery of the ruins on the streets and the motivational speeches as well as the persistent demeanor of the Ukrainian president made me realize that peace is grounded on the struggles of the predecessors. All the effort made and the strength shown by the Ukrainian people is very palpable here in Taiwan, as we also neighbors an authoritarian world power, await to take over us. We appreciate that the Ukrainian people try hard to show the cruelty and the reality of the war to the world, besides its absurdity and injustice. In response, we donate and show our support and solidarity in other humanitarian ways, which highlights the value of democracy and freedom.
Seeing the boy in the trailer naively say that he wants to become an astronaut and explore the space, I almost cried and wondered if the children still have the possibilities to pursue their dreams as the war continues. It reminded me of a remark made by the philosopher Aristotle that the purpose of war is peace. The Russian president has experienced a setback as the planned quick victory turned out to be seesaw battles. Nevertheless, I hope the war to be concluded as soon as possible so that people can return to their land and rebuild homes, peacefully and freely, without any concern of military aggression. May the sun shine, the children laugh, their dreams pursued, and the real peace be realized.
As the speech made by president Biden on the united effort of the free world to support the people of Ukraine goes, “ A dictator bent on rebuilding an empire will never erase a people’s love for liberty. Brutality will never grind down their will to be free. Ukraine will never be a victory for Russia—for free people refuse to live in a world of hopelessness and darkness. We will have a different future—a brighter future rooted in democracy and principle, hope and light, of decency and dignity, of freedom and possibilities.” I believe in hope and in the resilience and the strength of the Ukrainian people. I believe Ukraine will win its victory and open a new page of history.

Notes On War And Love
Imperial colonial optics always presuppose myopia. Expecting to take Ukraine in a matter of days, Russia underestimated the Ukrainian army as much as it underestimated Ukrainian culture, identity, and ability to mobilize and support each other in critical situations. Almost everyone in the country who is not at war has become a volunteer today. One of the key things that Ukraine is able to oppose Russia in this war of aggression is strong and extensive horizontal ties, repeatedly strengthened by a sense of unity in the face of a common threat and common pain.
This rhizomatic pain, which pervades your whole being, manifests the same rhizomatic love. Love stitched in every molecule. This is not an abstract construct of "love of country" – majestic, hierarchical, and dehumanizing, as is customary for the imperialists. This love is horizontal, decentralized, networked, poetic and very specific, and effective. This love keeps heaps of everything and everyone. It can’t be destroyed by any horrors or doubts, because it is not fragile and doesn’t break. It’s not stored in one place. It’s tight and evenly distributed, self-healing, it’s everywhere, in the stem cells, from which we are able to grow anything that will be needed. They can bomb our cities and oil depots. But our main fuel is evenly distributed in millions of reservoirs, and i’s inexhaustible.

Russian Invasion of Ukraine: Make Art Not War (translated)
Chia-Chieh Lee
Driven by lust for power and his egoism, Vladimir Putin, a brutal warlord, turned a blind eye to history, reenacted the tragedy, and seeded hatred by launching the war. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has been more than a month, causing countless innocent civilians and children to die from explosion, abuse, and other forms of violence. In the news, the mourning Ukrainian swore to cut Putin’s throat. The war not only ruins the cities but also deepens the anger long borne by the Ukrainian. If the president of Russia has any sympathy for the people and their lives, he ought to put down the guns as well as his power.
The Voice of Art
In 2016, before the outbreak of the pandemic, I saw a work entitled, “Make Art Not War,” at TATE in London. Back then, I was a young student born in the 90s and had not experienced or witnessed a war. I couldn’t fully grasp the significance of the title but thought that the beauty of art was capable of soothing all kinds of anger and grieving souls. It is only until the recent war in Ukraine that I came to contemplate this work again. The father of the painter, Smith, survived the Second World War and was a veteran and a painter himself. On his deathbed, he told his son, “Make art, not war. Don’t hate; draw.” His last words, gained from one of his most important lived experiences and now delivered to his offspring, was about making art and letting go of hatred.
“The most important thing is probably about art, family, and every single day that one can still breathe.”
If All Cruelty Becomes Tenderness
French artist Mister Blick transmits a sense of conflict and epiphany by replacing tender and colorful flowers into the place that was originally weapons in black and white photos about wars. The tender and beautiful flowers were placed at the critical spots and thus transformed the image of war’s cruelty into an image of softness and warmth. By combining two mediums, the artist creates his own interpretation between fantasy and reality.
Voicing for the People
Though geographically distanced from Ukraine, our thoughts are with the Ukrainian people. When the oppression is from the dominant world powers, we need to find all possible ways to leverage it. Besides donation, sponsorship and voicing our solidarity, we can also pray for the Ukrainian. Helen Keller once said, "We may have found a cure for most evils; but we have found no remedy for the worst of them all, the apathy of human beings.”
Matthew7:7: Ask, and it will be given you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened for you. May God help Ukraine and its people find the door to peace. The prayer below is for everyone, regardless of your religion, as blessing is without a frontier. Hope we can all spend a little time, instead of on scrolling, close our eyes and to pray for the Ukrainian people: Prayer: Dear Lord, Please stop the war. Please cure the wounded and return the missing to their loved ones. Please ease the hatred between Russia and Ukraine and restore the peaceful days… (feel free to add) In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
“Thank you for reading. May the world be in peace.”

“Make art, not war. Don't hate, draw”

When I was laying down there in the bunker under the bombing, I realized that I wouldn’t be able to live like before, that life after wouldn’t be like it was before, and the many things would need to be done differently. I think some of my knowledges will gain more relevance, such as the experience working with abandoned buildings, uncomfortable spaces. Many buildings are damaged or destroyed in Ukraine now, and the reconstruction will take a long. Cultural actors will face the situation of lack of infrastructure. So, we will need to work where we can. We will also need to work together to develop new ideas for dealing with injuries, because now all of us in fact are traumatized by this war.
I believe that we will have a cultural renaissance after the war, but now when ongoing hostilities happening, I can't say what I can do at least useful right now, and how I can influence the current situation, apart from providing humanitarian aid. I think that these areas of humanitarian and volunteer will be relevant for a very long time, because many people were left homeless.

At the moment, it is hard to predict how long the war may last, but given the number of war crimes, damage and civilian victims revealed in the cities, towns and villages affected by the war, it is clear that the process of restoring peaceful life in Ukraine will be long, difficult and painful. We are now observing how interaction between grassroots initiatives, NGOs from different regions in Ukraine is gaining new importance as they collaboratively create humanitarian hubs to support internally displaced persons, arranging the cross-organizational logistical flow of humanitarian aid to cities affected by the war.
After the war the importance of cooperation between self-organized grassroots initiatives will only increase, requiring both financial and intellectual support for the reintegration of occupied territories, the return of refugees from abroad and internally displaced people, and the restoration of job opportunities and working places. Arts initiatives and cultural centers, many of whose facilities were destroyed, have the potential to become important community spaces for cross-disciplinary interaction and rebuilding.

Dear Nien-Ting,
I read with interest the information about the Ukraine-Taiwan-international art project Unstable Condition. The reference to Camus, and some of the nuances of the Taiwanese situation and attitude, I found particularly worthwhile.
I had been discussing the Ukraine war with a politically experienced associate of mine a few days before your email arrived. After speaking with her I and found myself thinking about Taiwan, and reflecting that Russia’s challenge to the geopolitical status quo may be most significant not because of what is happening in Ukraine (which is, after all, part of the historic Slavic lands), but because it raises the prospect that other more meaningful military action could occur elsewhere – specifically in the south China Sea area. Then your email came through, discussing the connection of the two situations.
I was intrigued last November by your visit to Ukraine, a photo from which I saw on social media. It makes more sense to me now. With hindsight I’m sure you too find that visit a fateful one.
I don’t believe I can make a relevant contribution to Unstable Condition, given my attitude to war and the human condition. I take a hawkish view of war, and am suspicious of partially-applied humanitarianism, which often camouflages a political agenda. As for the human condition it seems to me that looking deep into ourselves is necessary, which means acknowledging the war within the human soul. I don’t see much evidence that people are taking this opportunity to speak from a place of self-knowledge; in fact I see the opposite. This is why the Camus reference grabbed my attention – it is evidence of an attitude that is willing to looking within. Your addressing of the neoliberal turn, and growing social dislocation, in Ukraine prior to the invasion, plus the mention of aspects of Taiwanese spirit and culture as both sarcastic and gloomy, along with hopeful, pleased me. This realism of understanding is necessary, otherwise we are wasting our energies in empty posturing.
Much of my recent writing-design work, MOUNTAINS OF FLAME AT THE EDGE OF A GREY DESERT, addresses conflict in manifold ways, and in many places explicitly examines war. I attach an image from this project (the Cyrillic text refers to the development of military tactics during the early Soviet era). I’m currently showing one of the series in an exhibition in Dublin, in the form of a print, but the work mostly exists digitally. I also have an essay due for publication online soon, and one already published a while back – these are also part of the same project. The intersection of ideology, the existential, and poetics, informs all this work.
I send the image for your consideration, in case you think the body of work I have created in the past few years is relevant to your curatorial vision at some point. As you know from our working together in Glasgow, my work operates at deep levels of the human condition, as well as providing visual drama, and sometimes comic effect, on the surface. Therefore, if you want to consider war and conflict at this deeper level in your future curating, or if you are creating a publication that addresses these themes, you have my work to consider. I have also given many artist talks, lectures, and participated in discussion panels, and would consider doing so again. If you think it is worth discussing with Jaxton in Singapore at any point please feel free to mention it to him.
Also, if things work out for me I will be in Japan later this year. I have been offered a place on an artist residency there. This depends of whether I will get a visa though, which hasn’t been processed yet. I don’t yet know if I will be able to travel to nearby countries, but if I can visit Taiwan I will. I’ll let you know if I make it to Japan. If I can somehow find funding I would of course very much like to give artist talks, or make happen other creative activity, in neighbouring countries such as Taiwan, and South Korea. It will of course also depend on whether travel restrictions are eased. One can always connect with internet of course, but face-to-face contact will perhaps come to the fore again for those of us committed to the highest quality of practice.
I know you will be busy now, and may not have time to reply. If what I write is of interest, but you are too busy with other duties, just keep this on file for if/when the time is right.
I hope that all is going fine with you. I’m pleased to see that you are active, and further exploring and expanding your creative power. I hope that there is good balance with work and life for you at this time.

'As a Korean artist who lives with the traces of war in a divided country, I know the sorrow of war better than anyone else.

The relation between Ukraine and Russia has been very unstable. Since the Crimea crisis through the ongoing war in Ukraine, people are forced to be in exile as their homeland became a battlefield. While the international society offers various humanitarian support, the cultural sector also has its way to confront and condemn the war. As a member of this world, VT Artsalon stands with the Ukrainian people. We are against the war and its violence and call on Russia to stop its aggression.

=============================

(This event has ended, thank you for your participation)

No food, no water, no electricity…people became homeless overnight; women and children fleeing from their homeland…None of us in the world should have experienced these, said the Ukrainian. (Ukrainian, anonymous, 7th March 2022)

Dear friends,

This is Open Place, an interdisciplinary platform from Ukraine, and Nien-Ting Chen, an independent curator from Taiwan. We are writing to invite you to join us for an art action in solidarity with the people of Ukraine. Our project Unstable Condition: Greeting from a Stranger addresses the unstable socio-political situations in Ukraine and in Taiwan respectively and aims to open discussions and facilitate multiple channels for expression. The project takes the form of an online interactive art platform, scheduled to be launched at the end of April. We sincerely invite you, as an artist, art practitioner, art institute, museum, or any other agent around the globe, to share your perspective (text or video) regarding the issues of anti-war and humanitarian care in the context of the current war in Ukraine and support the Ukrainian people through art.
.
Unstable Condition: Greeting from a Stranger was initiated at the beginning of 2021 and was originally planned to have the exhibition opening with the following lecture program at Artsvit Gallery in Dnipro as well as at the National Art Museum of Ukraine in April 2022. As the war broke out, the physical exhibition had to be postponed and instead, it has been replaced by a virtual exhibition. The exhibition features 11 groups of representative artists from Ukraine and Taiwan, presenting the political attitudes and social observations of people from both countries through visuals, and re-examining the changes in the world order of the two geopolitical bodies in the post-cold war period. The artists continue to bear witness as Ukraine in the midst of the war while revisiting the atmosphere of the Cold War with apocalyptic prophecies of human civilization. The theme of this art project is “Unstable Condition,” implying that such turbulent situations are not only happening to Ukrainians, but to all. Our past visions of the future are being reconstructed. We hope that this art project will allow the audience to feel the tension of the current international situation through virtual reality, and allow us to see the world we are in now through the suffering experience of Ukraine.

Xctuality, our project partner, is a professional multimedia tech team from Singapore that supports us with this virtual platform. Viewers around the globe can have access to this virtual art platform via one link. There are four functions on this site. In addition to showcasing the artworks by the Ukrainian and Taiwanese artists, “Hand in Hand” is one section open to art institutes, museums, art practitioners, and other agents in this field around the globe in response to what is happening in Ukraine. We also wish to bring attention to the difficulty faced by the Ukrainian art and cultural industry. Furthermore, this platform encourages viewers' contributions to the comment board as a way to support the fleeing Ukrainian people. Last but not least, a section is dedicated to the donation portal. Everyone can donate directly to Ukraine through this platform without the mediation of the curatorial team or any third party.

We strongly believe that art plays a significant role in society, as it inspires and encourages exchanges in a non-intrusive way. We, as Open Place and Nien-Ting Chen, cordially invite you to join us via TEXT or VIDEO RECORDING, sharing your opinions in response to the theme of our art project and what’s happening in this world, or simply to show support to the people working in the art and cultural field in Ukraine. After receiving your contribution, we will share them on our virtual platform and let the world see how support and regard can be sent through the practice of art, to the war-torn yet resilient people in Ukraine.

WHO ARE WE?

We, Open Place and Nien-Ting Chen met at an exhibition in 2019. We decided to collaborate as we shared visions. Through frequent virtual meetings and in-person visits to Ukraine, we witnessed the parties go through the pandemic, the threat foreshadowing the war in Ukraine, and even as the war is ongoing. Now, we ask to tell a story on this virtual platform about the unforeseeable future. But we believe through art, we can continue to strive for communication and exchange.

Open Place started as an initiative of Ukrainian artists founded in 1998. It devotes itself to establishing strong connections between artists and different layers of Ukrainian society. Open Place facilitates exchanges between artists and curators, both in Ukraine and internationally, and promotes collaboration among different parties, in times of transition in art, politics, and society. We believe art and culture play a significant role in fostering diverse perspectives in civil society, resolving conflicts, and challenging discrimination and intolerance in society. We also believe art institutes should be active agents in participating in cultural events, creating common values within the vast social framework, and involving themselves in artistic phenomena and the development of cultural context. Since its founding in 1998, Open Place has executed projects in Ukraine, the US, Sweden, Poland, and Taiwan, among other countries. We hope to expand the influence of art, so more people from different backgrounds can engage in the creative process of art. We engage with participants of diverse backgrounds to participate collectively, through dialogue and art-in-residence projects. And we continue to expand as an initiative of a grassroots network of art in Ukraine and abroad.

Unstable Condition-Greeting From A Stranger
Exhibition Statement

“For the first time, in that night alive with signs and stars, I opened myself to the gentle indifference of the world. Finding it so much like myself—so like a brother, really…“ (Albert Camus, The Stranger)

While I pretended to stand beyond the world, I realised that I have been estranged from it…. Our current time seems to be when human civilization is in a state of uncertainty as to where tomorrow will be, and this is no longer an unfounded apocalyptic prophecy. Meursault, a fictional character, created by the 20th century French philosopher Albert Camus, has always looked at the ever-changing world and society in an abstract way, and cares nothing about the cause-and-effect relationship established by the social framework and operational logic of the current evolving world, but intuitively embodies the insightful human civilisation. This art exchange project between Ukraine and Taiwan invites artists from both states to interpret their keen observation and perception of the world’s operation into their art creation, presenting the current world reality of the two states through the history of different stages, technological development, and their own feelings in the world.

It is obvious that crisis and unstable conditions are the main signs of today’s being. In Ukraine, the idea of building a welfare state was replaced with the idea of a neoliberal country, which caused the globalisation of economic processes and the concentration of financial flows in a narrow circle. The war ongoing in Ukraine since 2014 and COVID-19 pandemic have only increased the dynamics of transitions from one unstable to another unsafe state. Ukraine has observed, in the recent ten years, three parallel tectonic shifts happening simultaneously in the political, labour, and cultural spheres. The transition to the political system which we have now has led to a fairly strict system of private control over production and economic benefits, which in turn led to a narrowing of the social field. The dramatic transformations have happened in the labour sphere of Ukraine. The transition from a planned economy to a post-industrial model led to the transformations in the labour market - part-time employment without long-term guarantees and reliable income became the existential facts for most residents of the industrial cities. Uncertainty about the future, anxiety, and instability of social and economic position have caused the bigger challenges. There are rising issues of disintegration of individuals in society, loss of a sense of belonging, individuals falling out of any social group, and the collapse of social connections. Artistic and cultural spheres are also facing a sharp turn worldwide. The instability of the situation has recouped by the amount of participation in various projects, and as a result the time that one spends on reflection, immersion in the topic––its problematization is reduced increasingly.

On the other side of the planet, Taiwan, for a very long time, has been confronted with the fact that it is on the edge of the earth, manipulated by the geopolitical and nationalist ideologies of both neighbouring and international powers. Taiwanese popular slang “Treat me like plastic?” Which interprets, “Am I transparent?” or “Do I mean nothing to you?” This slang gives a sense of the Taiwanese sarcastic spirit that is reflected in daily life under the helpless social stalemate. In the past millennium, Taiwan witnessed a historic shift of political parties, a transfer of power to the oppositional party, ending the fifty-five-year monopoly of the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT, from ROC) in Taiwan. The hope for democracy, truth, and reconciliation, had finally found a chance to sprout in the gradually changing political environment, empowering people to turn the pages of historical documents, which were once shrouded in the shadow of authoritarianism. Through our own eyes, tearing open the wounds of the past and carrying the pus and blood, step by step, to walk out a new page in the divided political and ethnic groups. However, the gloom persists. Taiwan‘s fate of geopolitics seems inescapable, there is an ever-increasing arms trade, an overlapping competition between economics and national interests.

Unstable Condition: Greeting From A Stranger
